How to Install the Pace Edwards SwitchBlade & SwitchBlade Metal Tonneau Cover

Feb 20 2026

The Pace Edwards SwitchBlade and SwitchBlade Metal retractable tonneau covers offer dependable truck bed protection in an easy-to-install, spring-driven design. With a compact canister and simple clamp-on system, SwitchBlade delivers smooth operation and solid security without complicated electronics.

While minor fitment details vary by truck model (Colorado/Canyon, F-150, Maverick, and others), the installation process remains consistent across applications.

This guide walks you through the major installation steps to ensure a smooth and successful setup.

Before You Begin

Tools Required
  • 7/16” wrench or socket
  • #2 Phillips screwdriver
  • Tape measure
  • Side cut or needle nose pliers
These tools are listed in the installation instructions

Most standard and full-size trucks will not require drilling into the body.
If drilling is necessary for drain tubes, use a 3/4” (19mm) hole and verify clearance underneath the bed before drilling

Step 1: Remove Packaging & Inspect Components

Your SwitchBlade ships in two boxes:
  • Canister box (Box 1 of 2)
  • Rail box (Box 2 of 2)
Remove from Packaging:
  • Canister assembly
  • Top cover
  • Rails
  • Clamp pack
  • Hardware pack
  • Drain tubes
Do not use a knife to open the rail box.

Open along the length of the box and lift rails out to prevent scratching on box staples

Perform a quick parts inventory before continuing.

Step 2: Position the Canister

Place the canister at the front of the truck bed directly behind the cab and center it side to side

To lift and steady the canister:
  • Wrap the pull strap around the center of the canister.
  • Double it up in your hand for better control
  • Proper centering helps ensure smooth rail installation in the next step.

Step 3: Install the Rails

  • Identify left and right rails (plastic end cap faces the tailgate).
  • Remove protective paper from the underside of the rail flanges (packaging only)
  • Guide the handle assembly into the open channel of the rail.
  • Slide the rail against the blanket guide on the canister.
  • Attach the rail using:
    • 1/4-20 x 1” rail bolt
    • Lock washer
    • Flat washer
    • Repeat for both sides.

Step 4: Install Clamps & Set Between-the-Rails (BR) Measurement

  • Position the rail end caps approximately 1/16” away from the tailgate
  • Install two clamp assemblies per rail:
    • Slide Clamp Grip onto the rail at the clamp relief.
    • Slide toward the rail bracket and shim.
    • Assemble clamp components and rotate until back plate fully contacts the bed rail
    • Tighten using the twist knob (do not overtighten).
    • Confirm Proper BR Dimension
  • Measure between the rails at both:
    • The canister
    • The tailgate end
    • The BR measurement must match the specification listed for your part number (shown in the instructions tables)
    • Side-to-side play should not exceed 1/8” per side
    • White shims (1/16”) and black shims (1/8”) can be added or removed to achieve proper spacing
    • Proper Between-the-Rails spacing is critical for optimal performance.
  • Attach the Pull Strap
    • Attach the pull strap to either clamp at the tailgate end by looping it through the assembly and securing the Velcro strips together
    • This ensures the strap is always within easy reach when closing the cover.

Step 5: Install Kickstands

  • Kickstands stabilize the rails at the tailgate end.
  • Loosely fasten kickstand assembly to clamp grip.
  • Rotate pivot foot so it contacts the flattest section of the bed wall.
  • Tighten wing nut.
  • Adjust bolt inward until rail is visually level
  • If needed, the base can be flipped 180° to accommodate varying bed wall clearance
  • Note: Kickstands are not compatible with factory Cargo Management Systems
  • Re-verify BR measurement after leveling.

Step 6: Lubricate & Position Sweep Seals

  • Locate the sweep seals (rubber weather strips) on the rails.
  • Apply provided UV protectant to:
  • Underside of sweep seal
  • Top of wear strip
  • Extend cover to tailgate.
  • Ensure seal angles outward toward the cover, not inward toward the bed rail
  • Avoid alcohol, petroleum, or silicone-based cleaners

Step 7: Install Drain Tubes

The SwitchBlade and SwitchBlade Metal are designed to channel rainwater into the canister and out through drain tubes
  • Confirm foam washer is in place on drain fitting.
  • Insert fitting into pre-drilled holes under canister until it clicks into place
  • Route tubing through factory drain ports or drilled holes.
  • Direct tubes downward so water exits the truck bed properly.
  • Drain tubes can be removed by turning fitting and aligning retaining tabs with notches

Step 8: Install Top Cover & Secure Pull Strap

  • Place the top cover onto the canister and secure using the four black top cover screws
  • With the cover fully open:
    • Attach 4” Velcro strip to existing pull strap.
    • Remove tape backing.
    • Secure Velcro strip to underside of rail at your desired position
    • This keeps the pull strap off the bed floor during cargo use.
