Tonneau Cover Maintenance Tips for Maximum Benefit
Jul 30 2025
- Use mild soap and water, and apply with a soft sponge or microfiber towel to gently lift dirt and grime without scratching the surface
- Rinse thoroughly to remove soap residue to avoid streaks and premature wear
- For stubborn contaminants (e.g. bird droppings or tree sap), use a cleaner specifically designed for your cover type. Always patch-test in a small hidden area before full application
- Cleaning Frequency: Ideally once a month or after heavy use, dusty conditions, or muddy jobs for optimal longevity
- Check weather stripping and seals every few months or after harsh weather. Look for cracks, dry rot, or gaps and replace seals as needed to prevent leaks and rust
- Apply a rubber conditioner or silicone-based sealant to keep seals flexible and weather-tight
- Inspect clamps, bolts, hinges, and mounting hardware. Tighten loose fasteners and address rust spots early using a rust remover or touch?up if necessary
- Hardware Check Frequency: Every 3,000-5,000 miles or with each oil change or after rough-road or vibration-heavy trips
- Use a silicone-based or dry lubricant (e.g. PTFE spray or dry wax), especially on rails, tracks, hinges, and latches. Avoid oil-based lube as they attract dirt and gum up operations
- Clear out dirt, sand, and debris from tracks with a soft brush or damp cloth as dirty tracks often cause jamming or uneven movement
- After cleaning, apply just enough lubricant to allow smooth operation, you don't want excess build-up. Operate the cover to spread it evenly, then wipe off any surplus
- Lubrication Schedule: Every 3-6 months, or after dusty/off-road use or cold weather exposure
- UV rays can fade vinyl and weaken seals. Use a UV protectant suited for your cover (e.g. vinyl or rubber-specific). Popular recommendations include the LEER Tonneau Cleaner.
- Apply after cleaning; spread evenly with a soft cloth, and reapply 1–2× per year depending on sun exposure
- Hard covers (fiberglass or painted) can benefit from a wax or sealant post-cleaning to protect color and resist UV fading
- In cold weather: Brush off snow regularly to avoid heavy buildup that can dent or stress the cover
- In hot conditions: Increase UV protection frequency and avoid folding harder materials when they're hot or brittle
- Ensure the cover is fully latched and sealed before storms to prevent water pooling and ingress
- Avoid overload: Never place heavy or sharp objects on the cover, this can distort panels, strain hinges, or void warranties
- Store removed covers properly in a cool, dry spot; keep them flat or gently stacked, ideally wrapped to prevent dings or UV exposure
- Store removed soft covers loosely (not folded at sharp creases) to avoid wear over folding lines.
- Always consult your cover's manual for model?specific cleaning materials, lubrication guidance, tension adjustment, and hardware specs. Using improper products (like petroleum-based cleaners on vinyl) may void warranties
- Some brands include tension adjusters that keep the cover taut but without sagging to reduce noise and wear; adjust evenly and test operation
