How to Install the UltraGroove and UltraGroove Metal Retractable Tonneau Cover

Feb 19 2026

The Pace Edwards UltraGroove and UltraGroove Metal Retractable Tonneau Covers deliver heavy-duty, all-durability with sleek styling and smooth retractable performance. Designed for long-term reliability and enhanced truck bed security, these premium covers install using a straightforward, step-by-step process.

While certain details vary by truck model (such as Chevy Colorado/Canyon or Ford F-150/Maverick), the core installation steps remain consistent.

This guide walks you through the major installation stages so you can install your UltraGroove or UltraGroove Metal with confidence.

Before You Begin

Tools Required:
  • Tape measure
  • Masking tape
  • #2 Phillips screwdriver
  • 3/8” wrench
  • 5/32” Allen wrench
  • 7/16” nut driver
  • Utility knife
  • Needle nose pliers
Most installations do not require drilling, as many trucks have factory drain holes. If drilling is required, use a 3/4” (19mm) hole and always check underneath the bed before drilling

Pro Tip: Carefully read through the instructions before starting.

Step 1: Unbox and Inspect Components

Your UltraGroove or UltraGroove Metal ships in two boxes:
  • Canister box
  • Rail box
  • Inside you'll find:
  • Complete canister assembly
  • Left and right rails
  • Top cover
  • Clamp pack & hardware
  • Clamp extensions
  • Drain tubes
  • Foam seal
Open the rail box along the length and remove rails carefully, do not slide them out of the end to prevent scratching

Perform a quick inventory to confirm all parts are present before continuing.

Step 2: Position the Canister

Place the canister at the front of the truck bed, directly behind the cab and centered side-to-side.

  • If installing alone:
    • Wrap the pull strap around the canister to lift and steady it.
    • Rest the canister on temporary supports (such as the shipping box or buckets), elevating it 2–3 inches for rail clearance
    • Proper centering makes rail installation significantly easier.
Step 3: Install the Rails

Before installing rails:

  • Make sure the handle latches are IN.
  • If the latches are out, the handle can catch on the rail during installation
  • Rail Installation Overview:
    • Identify left and right rails (plastic cap faces tailgate).
    • Remove protective foam backing (packaging only).
    • Hook the outside groove of the rail onto the rail guide.
    • Align the rail sill vertical between the 3rd and 4th ribs of the rail guide spacer
    • Rotate the rail downward into position.
    • Slide forward until fully seated.
    • Secure with rail screw, flat washer, and lock washer.
    • If the rail feels stuck while pushing forward, gently lift the handle while continuing to apply forward pressure
Step 4: Install the Top Cover & Set Tailgate Seal
  • Close the tailgate and pull the rails back to ensure proper tailgate cap seal engagement.
  • Correct spacing should allow approximately 1/4" gap between the bottom cap and the tailgate
  • You can also use the included Tailgate Seal Gauge to confirm proper alignment.
  • Next Steps:
    • Mark the front rail position with masking tape.
    • Apply the foam seal across the front sill.
    • Slide the rails and canister back into position.
    • Secure the top cover with the included screws.
    • Proper foam installation is critical for water resistance.
Step 5: Install Clamp Extensions

Each rail requires front and rear clamp extensions labeled:

  • FL (Front Left)
  • FR (Front Right)
  • BL (Back Left)
  • BR (Back Right)
  • Orientation matters:
  • Tailgate end: 1/8” black shim, set screw facing tailgate
  • Cab end: 1/16” white shim, set screw facing cab
  • Slide extensions into place and tighten with a 5/32” Allen wrench.
Step 6: Install Clamps & Set Between-the-Rail (BR) Measurement
  • Attach two clamp assemblies per rail.
  • Rotate back plates toward the center of the truck bed before tightening
  • Before fully tightening:
    • Measure between rails at both the canister and tailgate.
    • Confirm measurements match specifications for your part number
    • Adjust shims as needed (white = 1/16”, black = 1/8”).
    • Proper BR dimension is critical for optimal cover performance.
    • Once correct, tighten clamps to 70 in-lbs
Step 7: Install Kickstands

Kickstands stabilize the rail at the tailgate end.

  • Attach to clamp grip.
  • Rotate so pivot foot contacts the flattest bed wall surface.
  • Adjust bolt inward until rails are visually level
  • Re-check BR measurement after leveling.
Step 8: Install Tailgate Drain Tubes

The UltraGroove  and UltraGroove Metal are designed to channel water into the canister and out through drain tubes.
  • Screw drain fittings into the tailgate cap.
  • Slide drain tubes onto fittings.
  • Route through factory holes or drill 5/8”–3/4” holes if necessary.
  • Trim tubing as needed
  • Proper drain installation is essential for maximum water management.
Step 9: Lubricate & Position Sweep Seals

Apply UV protectant to:
  • Underside of sweep seals
  • Top of wear strips inside rails
  • Ensure seals angle outward toward the cover, not inward toward the bed rail.
  • Avoid alcohol, petroleum, or silicone-based cleaners.
Step 10: Install Canister Drain Tubes
  • Insert fittings into pre-drilled holes under the canister until they click into place.
  • Route tubing downward through factory access ports or drilled holes, ensuring proper drainage
Step 11: Attach the Pull Strap

With the cover fully open:
  • Attach the 4” Velcro strip to the existing pull strap.
  • Secure to the underside of the driver-side rail to keep the strap off the bed floor
